Smink Studio works with interior designers, architects and contractors on homes, hotels, restaurants and shops around the world. Every tile is handmade to order in Portugal and screen-printed in colours you choose. Every project comes with a bespoke layout design, drawn by our studio to your client’s exact dimensions.

What trade clients get

  • Trade pricing on every order
  • A complimentary sample kit for each project: tiles and colour chips chosen to match your brief
  • A bespoke layout design at no charge. It’s a tile-by-tile plan drawn to scale, with exact quantities and trim pieces, revised until you and your client are happy.
  • One contact in the studio from first samples to delivery
  • Technical data sheets and glaze guides covering dimensions, water absorption, strength, frost resistance, glaze properties and slip test results (see downloads below)
  • Custom colours: for projects over 20 m² / 200 sq ft, we can develop a glaze to match a paint, fabric or brand colour

How a project works

  1. Send us the brief. Elevations, floor plans, a mood board or a single reference image are all good starting points.
  2. Receive samples. We put together a sample kit to match the brief.
  3. Approve the layout. You confirm colours and dimensions, and we draw the layout and refine it with your feedback. You receive a full schedule of tile types and quantities.
  4. Order. Production starts once the order is confirmed, and the tiles ship directly from our factory in Portugal.

Worth knowing at specification stage

  • Lead times: production takes between six and ten weeks, plus 10–20 days for delivery, depending on location. Because every tile is made to order, we cannot guarantee a delivery date, so please build in a margin. The factory closes for two weeks in August and at the end of December.
  • Minimums: Relief tiles have a minimum of 3 m² / 33 sq ft per glaze colour. Screen-printed tiles share one base glaze, so even a small installation can use several colours.
  • Quantities: the layout gives exact numbers, so an overage of 5–10% is usually enough.
  • Floors: floor tiles are 1.4 cm thick and suit interior floors in dry areas. Glazed tiles have low slip resistance when wet; slip test results are in the technical data sheet.
  • Duties: outside the EU, the buyer is the importer of record and pays any import duties.
  • Credit: your client uses the layout for their installation, and the design itself remains ours. We ask permission before publishing photographs of a finished project and always credit the designer.

Hotels, restaurants and shops

Sandro has used Smink tiles since 2019 in hundreds of stores in more than 50 countries. Hotel projects include the W Hollywood, the Grayson in New York, Moxy Banff, Hyde Ibiza and Novotel Seville. Restaurants include Nando’s in the UK, Kappo DC in Washington and Starter Bakery in Oakland. We can build a brand pattern or logo into the design, and phase production to match a building programme or a store roll-out.

See the tiles

The best way to judge colour and surface is with a sample kit. As our tiles are made-to-order, we rarely work with showrooms or retailers.
