Calm, colour-rich bathroom
The goal of this project was simply to tile the shower section of a bathroom but it quickly became clear that our clients were open to something a little different and experimental. They wanted warm colours and a fluid design and after six iterations, we arrived at the design you see in these images: a dynamic but cohesive pattern given movement by its horizontal orientation and rendered in a selection of rich sunset screen-printed colours.
Every design process that we go through is a collaboration and the outcome is a combination of our clients’ vision and our expertise. In this project our clients began by referencing the Sjoelen pattern and the Final Curtain Call pattern, set in a palette of warm orange tones. This choice provided a strong foundation for the tile installation and we ran with this brief, creating a pattern that was new and just a little quirky. The design application was specifically limited to the shower area, covering three walls and creating an intimate, fully tiled wet-zone environment.
The design process involved multiple iterations and the end result was a layout that featured a higher ratio of solid, cream-colored tiles, strategically balancing the bold orange pattern with open, plain areas. The colours used were 007, 008, 301 and 308 all on a rich cream base glaze.
Later, the architect introduced an opportunity to place a niche within a newly constructed partition wall (to conceal an air duct), an essential detail that allowed the tile layout to be fully integrated with the room’s functionality.
