Black and white staircase wall

This project began with a mood board for a renovation project in Provence, France. The house boasted a pool, a boules court and a yoga terrace just half an hour from a famous wine region. It needed to feel relaxed and homely but the plan was also to rent out the house for part of the year, so it needed to have a sophisticated richness that would appeal to guests.

This was a ‘blank canvas’ challenge where the most important design direction was the atmosphere that our clients wanted to achieve. The monochromatic design was our take on the pared-down aesthetic that flowed through the whole house. You can see the design with other suggested colourways here.

In response to our initial design, our clients decided that they wanted even more calmness. We did this by adjusting the balance of screen-printed and solid white tiles to create a more harmonious space. After a few iterations, we reached the current design.

Despite the apparent simplicity, there are 21 different tiles in this layout. Our custom designs and made-or-order process allows us to create bespoke tile installations in this way, producing only the tiles that are needed and no more.
